A late friend of mine gave me the perfect description for dilapidated old barns like this one. Paul would say, “Look! There’s an air-conditioned barn.” Having grown up on a farm during the Great Depression, my friend knew a lot about hard work and barns. Barns that had openings on more than one side drew air through them even if no breeze was blowing. The cooling breeze and shade provided those working inside the barn a little relief from the summer’s heat and humidity.
Every time I see a barn like this I think of my good friend Paul and his many old wise sayings.
“Air-conditioned Barn” is my Photo of the Week.

I’m guessing from your tags this is a Shenandoah Valley barn. Wow, it is huge. My husband finds it very depressing to see those old air-conditioned barns. Likely you too. But that seems to be part of life for many farms.

Yes. This farm is near Broadway.

This is a good one. I remember how we (as a child) worked hard in the barn at hot summer day and were happy to feel the air. And my grandma also answered that this barn is Air-conditioned. 🙂

It must be universal rural lingo then. 😄 Thanks for sharing. Bruce

I think I recognize this barn, Bruce, about a mile farther north from the strawberry patch. It had been retrofitted as a chicken house, but it eventually could no longer compete with the large, long, modern structures required today by corporate agriculture.
